SAMM Celebrates Motherhood, Heritage, and new workshops!

As May unfolds, we celebrate Mother's Day and also Asian and South Asian Heritage Month, a time to cherish the richness of our diverse cultures and the unique journey of motherhood. In this mosaic of traditions, the South Asian Mommies of Milton (SAMM) stand proud, contributing their vibrant colors and patterns to enrich our cultural landscape.

SAMM, deeply rooted in the immigrant experience, understands the challenges of forging new identities in foreign lands. Through shared experiences and tireless support, SAMM offers solace and strength, transforming individual struggles into collective triumphs.

In celebration of motherhood and South Asian Heritage Month, SAMM unveils two empowering initiatives: SAMM Socials and SAMM Mentors. These diverse workshops, running until December, aim to uplift individuals and our children alike.

SAMM Socials, in collaboration with the Milton Public Library, offers a range of workshops; our first workshop is about tracing South Asian Migration History and documenting your family history. These free and inclusive gatherings underscore SAMM's commitment to accessibility and community connection.

"Through our partnership with SAMM, the library becomes a gateway to explore the vibrant mosaic of South Asian culture, fostering understanding and celebration." - Chris Dorscht, Director of Customer Experience at Milton Public Library.

SAMM Mentors guide various career options. We are grateful to all our facilitators for volunteering their time and expertise. A special shout-out goes to our SAMM Sister Alpa Patel for providing space for the Mentor workshops; our first one will focus on the aerospace industry.

SAMM is deeply involved in promoting the arts and supporting local artists and businesses. Events like RaagKatha, and Kala showcase South Asian culture, and recent collaborations with FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton and Arts Milton have drawn praise.

"Their dedication to promoting arts and culture in Milton is not only commendable but essential for fostering creativity and unity among our residents." - Auleen Carson, President of Arts Milton

"Art and culture truly transcend boundaries and bring the community together. I extend my sincere congratulations to all participating artists." - Siddhartha Nath, Consul General of India

Post-pandemic, SAMM has redoubled efforts to support children in social interaction, organizing playdates, picnics, potlucks, and supporting community causes.

SAMM Founder Diksha Pal Narayan captures the essence of our collective journey: "In SAMM, we find support from the distances separating us from our homelands. In a world where blending cultures is both a challenge and an opportunity, let us be a vital bridge between traditions, nurturing an environment where heritage meets harmony."

SAMM extends a warm invitation to all community members, regardless of ethnicity, to participate in its programs and initiatives, embodying the spirit of Mother's Day by embracing diversity and empowerment.
